Super Stardom in the Making - David Archuleta

Just saw a truly knock-out performance of John Lennon's 'Imagine' - by 17 year old American Idol contestant David Archuleta.

A great great performance - the audience can't hold back throuhout, one of the judges cries. Cos David makes the song absolutely his own with this beautiful arrangement, not pushed too hard in the singing or mannered in any way. You are not aware of technique - but just seem to directly experience the meanings of the lyric though the music. Moved me like you wouldn't believe.

And it's so very difficult to do anything with such an iconic song and with the legendary Lennon performance in everyone's mind. But David Archuleta nails it absolutely - a superstar of the (very near) future!

  1. lol - I hope you don't mind if I disagree with you. Sure, that version wasn't bad, but to me, was nowhere near the John Lennon version. And I remember seeing a video of a live performance by John of that song that he did with so much friggin emotion that it had EVERYONE's eyes tearing up.

That song will probably be song for centuries and will always bring stirring emotions, but sadly I really doubt that the sentiments behind the song will ever come true.

  2. each to their own of course - and he's 17 so showing potential! yeah, the song is a hope rather than something realizable. take care!

  3. I am of Greg's way of thinking/feeling/reacting. Sure enough, he (David that is, I don't know Greg personally ^^) has a great voice for his age and I can see all the wonderous possibilities from now on. But ("forgimme, language-nazi mums amd grandmas of the world united") "Imagine" is John Lennon's alone for me. Not because it was actually one of his very own Masterpieces(which it was!), it has much more to do with (or at least as much) with his passionate, commited interpretation of it.

Still wishing David all the best but these sort of talent shows(oh yes, we have about a dozen of them currently running here in Portugal and 9 of them are catering to the locals - format imported, but show done with national wannabes only) always disappoints me a bit. I grew up on Eurovision local Festivals and 'write/compose your own songs' huge TV events, so... what is wrong with taking chances, risking ridicule(I aced that ^-^) and doing your own stuff rather than going for classics which cannot - or at least almost never, I sense (sorry) be bettered?

Just my two cents, Nick, please cut me some slack, OK?

  4. hey peter, some slack, ok, i'll just pass your comments alone to david, who has a group of thugs who in their turn will sort you out - they have ways and means - it won't be pretty - etc - LOL. Hugs before the end ! xxx

  5. Ever so grateful, Nick ;)
Now I can genuinely tremble on/in my stilleto..erm..if I had any, mostly I'm housebound barefoot, outdoors sandal/ski-footware depending on the season)

    HUGEHUGARAMA,

    Peter

P.S.: I am very much turned on by the idea that "it wouldn't be pretty" and devoting way too much of my time visualising how these thugs of him would look like/be built like. Does that make me an irredeemable perv in your eyes? So be it, says I! :-P

  6. hey peter, i am trembling for you - i like the idea of momentarily retiring the stiletos - fewer holes in the parquet flooring! bare feet, and also thongs till the danger subsides? i hear that david, once he has had his way with you (a few times!) he'll leave you in peace and you can rise into your heels again. i think a week should do it. he hides his deeeeeep perversion in a sweet innocence - cunning!

    big big hugs

  7. Very cunning of him, and very daggy (WTF?) of you to suggest I have any heels but Achille's-like ones (and just 2 of them) to rise up to. I dread/fear/ignore the possibility of ever being in tacones lejanos, high heels, whatever drag costume I CANNOT think of! lol ;) Are we clear on this particular subject, Nick, sweetie dahhhling :P ?
No you have not touched a soft-sore-raw-g spot, rest assured. I just like to engage in witty (heh!) banter ^_^ (clearly flattering myself here, of course)

Multi-Hugs (I contain multitudes of them for the right kind of awesome human being, yep),

  8. hey peter. the danger of the dag - you are right! LOL. your banter is ever witty and sparkling and i always look forward to getting the puter on in the hope of more. the mardi gras party is tomorrow night and it's hard to know whether to go or not - usually hace a great blast but a long hard night with lots recovery the next day/s. i'll make a decision tomorrow - it's another day (scarlet variation). is any kind of gay mardi gras celebrated there? multiforous hugging. be in touch

  9. Reporting From Hollywood, CA USA

I have seen David Archuleta three times and his singing and stage presence is awesome for a 17 y/o guy. I saw him sing a rock song last week and I was really taken by it. He is so natural and focused. Last night he was really sobbing when one of the girls was booted off. He kept looking away from the camera....tears streaming down his face. His cute smile really helps a lot too. Actually the Idol show is beneath him. He should be performing on stage in a huge arena. As Paula said, "Super star"...... I rarely ever buy any modern works but this guy is awesome.

  10. hey douglas. didn't realize david was performing already - but of course why would he, or anyone starting out. Envy you having seen him. Glad to hear he can command a stage. and that he is sensitive too. and i agree, he's ready to go, now - doesn't need Idol, cept the recording contract would be good - tho he'd get one anyway! he IS awesome.
